60 Months From Today
This morning I want to share with us how to be successful in our journey to meaningful relationships, great marriages, true joy, fulfilling work and being more like Jesus. In 60 months from today, we are closer to being who God has destined us to be
60 Months From Today – Part 3
It was the famous theologians, “The Proclaimers” that said,
“I would walk 500 miles and I would walk 500 more…….da da ta da…ta da da dadda da da da.”
I don’t think they were the first to come up with that, in fact, it’s actually a Chinese Proverb that says, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”
So true, but it also has powerful implications in the negative. What if we take steps in the wrong direction? Then one step at a time we find ourselves in the wrong place; that happened one step at a time because of being on the wrong path.
This morning I want to share with us how to be successful in our journey to meaningful relationships, great marriages, true joy, fulfilling work and being more like Jesus. In 60 months from today, we are closer to being who God has destined us to be. Before we dive into our verse, let me lay a foundation about the change we see in Romans 12:1-2.
Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is— his good, pleasing and perfect will.
Romans 12:1-2 NIV
First, if we’re going to agree to be like Christ, to be Jesus in 3D we must have…
- Dedication: Committing our Bodies to God.
- Concentration: Must refocus our minds.
Whatever has your thinking, has you. All of us have a pattern or model we follow. Some of us have a pattern on how to react when things don’t go as we plan. A pattern on showing love. A pattern for conflict resolution. A pattern for finances. A pattern for raising children. A pattern for those you dislike or disagree with. And most of the time they are terrible patterns because they come from humans. Even the best human, the best parent, boss, coach, a teacher is going to steer us wrong. God will not. And so, tucked in this verse is a simple principle that we must come to grips with if we’re truly going to change: To change my life. I must change my pattern. To change my life, I must change my pattern. I think we all have struggled with that. But today I want to share with you how we can really do it. How we can start the journey of 1000 miles with a single step. Look with me at two scripture verse that says the same story but one gives a little bit more detail. Deuteronomy
If you should say in your heart, ‘These nations are greater than I; how can I dispossess them?’— you shall not be afraid of them, but you shall remember well what the Lord your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt
Deuteronomy 7:17-18 NKJV
Don’t look at your limitations. Look to the Lord and remember all He has done.
You shall not be terrified of them; for the Lord your God, the great and awesome God is among you. And the Lord your God will drive out those nations before you little by little; you will be unable to destroy them at once, lest the beasts of the field become too numerous for you. But the Lord your God will deliver them over to you and will inflict defeat upon them until they are destroyed.
Deuteronomy 7:21-23 NKJV
Little by Little…. this is key!!! We set a big goal, we think success is achieved at the end of the journey, at the end of our lives. We set new year’s resolutions thinking 12 months we can get it done…. Look at Exodus 23:29-30 and theirs another key element.
I will not drive them out from before you in one year, lest the land becomes desolate and the beasts of the field become too numerous for you. Little by little I will drive them out from before you until you have increased, and you inherit the land.
Exodus 23:29-30 NKJV
Little by little and it won’t be in one year’s time. God is telling his people ahead of time essentially, “It’s going to be hard, but I’m with you.” Why does God do that? Because that’s how faith works. He gives us just enough for us to continually trust, continually rely on, continually put our faith in Him. If he did it all because he could…he
It’s very possible we’ve been looking at this all wrong. We think in terms of big goals, big steps, big life-changing commitments. Look around we watch shows and movies in a society that says to us all the time, “Go big or go home.”I love the meme I saw that said, “Go big or go home…they seriously underestimate my wanting to go home…it’s all I want to do.” TRUTH right?!?!?!
So here is what all this boils down to, the big question: What one small discipline must you start doing to move in the right direction? Listen! It’s better if it’s not big. In fact, if it’s small then you can accomplish it and if it’s a small goal that pleases God! Zechariah 4:10 says
Zechariah 4:10 NLT
Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin, to see the plumb line in Zerubbabel’s hand.” (The seven lamps represent the eyes of the Lord that search all around the world.)
Zechariah 4:10 NLT
In his book, Mini Habits, author Steve Guise said and I quote,
“When I decided to start exercising consistently 10 years ago, this is what actually happened: I tried “getting motivated.” It worked sometimes. I tried setting audacious big goals. I almost always failed them. I tried to make changes last. They didn’t. Like most people who try to change and fail, I assumed that I was the problem. So I set a MINI HABIT….1 to push up a day”
He goes on to explain how if you set your goal to work out in the gym 30 mins a day…life happens then all the sudden you’re on the couch getting ready to go to bed and you talk yourself out of it. I’d have to change and drive and really I could just do it tomorrow…and the cycle repeats. But what if you said, 1 push up. That is a stupidly small goal that you can do. And often you’ll elevate to do maybe 2 or 3. Don’t despise small goals!!!!
For me personally, I’ve always set a new year goal to lose 50 pounds. Every weight loss contest I do great in. I’m motivated, focused and go!!! I’ve lost 30 pounds in 8 weeks, then in 12 weeks I found them and they brought friends. So, instead of over the next 60
Set a goal too small to fail. Does God really endorse that idea? Jesus said in Matthew 13:31-32
Matthew 13:31-32 NKJV
Another parable He put forth to them, saying: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field, which indeed is the least of all the seeds; but when it is grown it is greater than the herbs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and nest in its branches.”
Matthew 13:31-32 NKJV
Not only does He endorse it….it’s how Heaven works!!!
Wow, what would our lives look like if we just did one small habit to move our lives, marriages, jobs, families in the right direction, something small? Never underestimate what God might do. Something special.Something powerful…that starts because you took one single act of obedience. Give God your Body. Make His Word your Pattern. Set a Small Goal.
